M
y work generally consists of densely textured layers exploring colour and texture through a fusion of hand dyed fabrics, hand made felt with embellishments of thread, wire, beads and feathers. I create rich landscapes, sunsets, seascapes and country gardens using wool and silk fibres in a ‘painterly ‘ way, creating blocks of vibrant colour before felting, blending and shading as I go. I then build up the layers with textured embellishment using the sewing machine as a drawing tool to bring the picture alive.
When viewed from a distance people often think my pieces are oil or acrylic paintings and are amazed on closer inspection to find they are textiles. They are pieces to lose yourself in, I’m often told they can change moods with different lighting and can constantly offer something new for the spectator to notice.
My ‘open’ pieces invite interaction from viewer, very textured and tactile they can be gently tweaked, where feathers or fluffy fibres are used a light breeze can add movement.
I have recently been working more in an illustrative way with dye and stitch, in an ink and wash style exploring the linear qualities of architecture and objects, producing contemporary scenes and images.
Having many years of teaching experience, I also run workshops and offer School Art projects
