Myra creates fantasies in hand-made felt. Large scale landscapes are deftly created through the long and very physical process of making wet felt from merino wool. Subtle blended colours are conjured up from the seemingly simple combination of dyed fleece fibres until eventually a landscape is revealed. The landscapes may have been sketched or photographed or even be a fantasy drawing on memories, but when seen, so many people relate to them, recall favourite walks and vistas that they become real, like nature once again.
Myra also creates smaller, more accessible pieces, made in just the same way but in a miniature scale.

'Heather Croft' wet felt landscape presented as open canvas style

This is my signature artwork style, large scale landscape fantasies in hand-made felt. I make these with the long and very 'hands-on' ancient physical process of making wet felt from merino wool. Subtle colour blends conjured from the simple combination of dyed fleece fibres until a single layered 'fleece' is made, this is soaped, rubbed and rolled and finally a glorious landscape is revealed. The inspiration landscapes may have been sketched or photographed or even fantasy drawn from memory, but when face to face, people relate deeply with them; recalling favourite walks and vistas. Finished pieces can be either mounted and framed under glass, or - my favourite - presented 'open tapestry' style. When presented open they are free to breathe and gently react with the environment of your room, the loose fibres gently moving in the breeze and the shadows moving as the light in the room changes. This is a satisfying confluence of natural material, depiction of nature and interaction with the environment.

This is one of a series of images inspired by visits to central Italy to see her daughter who was at university there.

Executed with a realistic palette of rich colours blended from Merino wool with complex textile embellishment, this presents a rolling British Dales landscape familiar to many of us. The bottom edge is left shaped from the felt-making process reinforcing the sense of an open and welcoming landscape. Based on sketches and photographs Myra takes on trips around the UK.

I make small landscapes in my signature artwork style. The material used - merino wool felt, is made in the same way as for the large wall art, and the method of embellishment is the same. It's just that everything is in miniature. These pieces will typically be framed under glass in a frame around 20x20 or 30x30cms or presented ready to frame. Subtle blended colours conjured from the simple combination of dyed fleece fibres are created as my canvas, and I work this together to make a very striking and varied landscape view. A number of these together make a very nice display. I vary the sizes of the landscapes, but work in series, producing just a very small number at a time.

These are made in exactly the same materials and method as Myra's larger pieces - Merino wool hand-made felt with embellishments applied by hand. These pictures present pure concentrations of colour and form and each piece is individual and unique. They are presented in an open 'tapestry' style (wrapped around a 1cm thick canvas) with the bottom edge being the natural wavy edge of the felt making it seem as though the hills are coming down to greet you.

I make several ranges of textile art 'objects' in order to get my art 'off the wall' and onto the shelf. Much in the same way as you would place a sculpture or ceramic item.
The example shown here is a miniature landscape.. This is a charming & detailed textile sculpture. Various designs available. Individually made in hand-made felt with embellishment of stitch and fabric, comes with a hand-carved driftwood style plinth. The felt has a lovely soft feel and an incredible richness of texture. Each one is individual and a little bit different. Sizes vary a little but are approximately 8x9 cms for the felt piece, when mounted on the included wood plinth they stand approx 11cm high.
